Wine tasting has become one of the top attractions in Malibu. This fun daytime activity pulls in all different types of crowds including locals, out of towners, the young (at least 21, of course!) and the old. I mean, what’s not to like about it? When you throw in sunny Southern California weather, good company, some stylish day-drinking attire, and top it all off with wine, you’re going to end up with a pretty good result. The All Things Malibu team recently took a trip to the Rosenthal Wine Tasting Room and we were not disappointed.

Pulling up to the tasting room we all realized that we have drove past here hundreds, if not thousands of times and noticed the large crowds gathering on the weekends. Upon arrival, we entered into the beautifully decorated bar room. The room boasts beautiful photography on the walls including a piece of the Berlin Wall on the shelf immediately to your right when you enter the room, as well as indoor tables and a well stocked bar. We were then greeted by one of the managers, Marc Applebaum. Marc was incredibly charismatic and knowledgeable about all the different types of wine.
Marc got us started with a wine tasting. The wine tasting included four different varieties including red and white. We started off with a refreshing white wine, followed by three different reds. Marc went on to inform us that all wines marked with the “Rosenthal” label were made from grapes grown on the Rosenthal Estate in Malibu. The other resident wine in the tasting room, “Surfrider”, is made from grapes grown in the Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo area. For more about the grapes and other related information about Rosenthal Wines visit their website www.rosenthalestatewines.com.
After our tasting in the bar, we took our wine outside to the large outdoor patio area. Their outdoor patio area is a perfect setting for wine tasting! This patio area is stocked with plenty of tables, benches and couches to accommodate their incredibly busy weekend crowds. We decided that the patio is the perfect size; large enough to be comfortable during the busy crowds but still small enough to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the tasting room.
While on the topic of atmosphere, the weekday and weekend atmospheres are quite different. The weekday vibe is more of a relaxed, low energy vibe. Less energy does not mean worse energy by any means. On the weekends, the crowds increase significantly from the weekdays (obviously) and the tasting room has similar energy to that of a day club. The whole property is buzzing by the time the afternoon rolls around. Adding to the lively weekend vibe, the outdoor patio area plays host to many popular Los Angeles food trucks as well as live music. If you’re looking for more of a mellow vibe, visit the tasting room on a weekday. If you want the higher energy day club vibe, visit the tasting room on the weekend.
The All Things Malibu team was incredibly pleased with our experience at the tasting room and we will definitely return. We received great service from our good friend, Marc, and we loved the wine. We would recommend it to anyone! If you plan on making a trip to Rosenthal Tasting Room, make sure to check out some important information below.
