People ask me when is the best time of year to add biology to the soil.
I like telling folks that they must always add soil biology to their properties. This is how Mother Nature does it, a little bit over time. Soil biology is naturally destroyed through many different natural systems mother nature has set in place. Things like weather and many other natural occurrences are common and can change soil biology over time. However, add mankind to the picture, and we find that all that mankind is good at is destroying not just soil biology but all biology.
We create toxins, and these toxins destroy biology, especially soil biology. Many folks do not understand that the chemicals in city water are meant to destroy biology like viruses and bacteria, and they also kill off the beneficial soil biology.
The sprinkler or drip system is constantly adding these chemicals into the soil and sterilizing the soil. Without soil biology, plants will not get the food they need and get sick.
So, it is important to add various sources of biology into the soil to help the biology stay alive and healthy. I talk a lot about compost and how, if it is properly made, it will add not just soil biology but also trace minerals back into the soil.
During the winter months here in southern California, it is the best time to add live compost to your soil. This allows for the microbes to establish themselves and start releasing the essential nutrients in the spring. Usually, winter means snow, so if you live where it snows, you should add the biology in the fall before it snows. Here, December through March are the ideal times to add your live compost turned into the soil and mulched over.
You should have a whole property water filter to stop the inflow of chemicals. Definitely, you must stop the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and stop chemical pest control companies from spraying toxic pesticides on your soil.
Then, several times per year, you should add live compost, rock dust, and mulch to keep the biology active and alive. One of the best ways to increase your soil biology is to make your worm farm and learn how to use it. I will write more on this. You should also learn how to make your compost tea. It is also important to have soil for your biology to live in, so add clean soil to your property twice a year. Also, mulch it to protect it from the sun. Once you have these in place, then you can apply an organic fertilizer, which will work better when the soil is alive.
Once you get the hang of it, you will find that all your plants will look better and be healthier.
