On September 27, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1297 into law, allowing the installation of speed cameras in Malibu. This legislation, authored by Senator Ben Allen, aims to address the long-standing issue of speeding along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), where excessive speed has led to numerous accidents and fatalities, with over 60 lives lost since 2010. The bill authorizes up to five speed cameras in high-risk areas, such as school zones, and includes public awareness campaigns and clear signage to alert drivers before enforcement begins.
The new speed enforcement cameras will help deter reckless driving by automatically issuing fines to drivers exceeding the speed limit. Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart emphasized the significance of this step in improving road safety and preventing further tragedies on PCH. The bill comes alongside other recent road safety initiatives, including a $4.1 million state allocation for infrastructure improvements along the highway.
For safety and to spare yourself a ticket, remember to slow down!
