Halloween in Malibu offers a unique blend of coastal charm, community spirit, and festive fun. While Malibu might not be a dense urban area, there are still several fantastic spots where families can enjoy trick-or-treating in a safe and exciting atmosphere. Whether you’re a local or visiting Malibu this October, here are some of the best places to trick-or-treat:

1. Point Dume Neighborhood*

The Point Dume area is known for its Halloween-friendly streets and beautiful community. Many homes in this affluent coastal neighborhood go all out with decorations, creating a magical environment for trick-or-treaters. Since the area is fairly residential, kids can enjoy safe streets with minimal traffic. The community is close-knit, and residents often treat visitors to plenty of candy and sometimes even hot chocolate for parents!

Why it’s great: Family-friendly, beautifully decorated homes, and a neighborhood known for embracing Halloween.

2. Malibu West*

Located just west of Point Dume, Malibu West is another excellent spot for trick-or-treating. This neighborhood has more homes and is popular with families, making it a safe and enjoyable option for kids. Residents often set up fun Halloween displays, making it a picturesque spot for Halloween evening. Just be sure you know someone in the neighborhood to get you on the list!

Why it’s great: A larger neighborhood that’s family-oriented with festive Halloween displays.

3. Malibu Country Mart Halloween Festivities

While Malibu is mostly residential, Malibu Country Mart hosts Halloween activities and a trick-or-treating event for children. Businesses and shops within the Mart hand out candy to little trick-or-treaters, and there are often costume contests, face painting, and other fun activities. It’s a great alternative if you want a more organized and central location to celebrate.

Why it’s great: Safe, contained area with plenty of candy, plus extra Halloween activities for children and families.

4. Trancas Country Market

The Trancas Country Market is another shopping center that hosts an annual Halloween event. Families can bring their kids for trick-or-treating at the various stores, and the market sometimes features pumpkin carving stations, live music, and spooky decorations. It’s a fantastic stop for those who want to trick-or-treat in a vibrant community setting.

Why it’s great: Halloween activities alongside trick-or-treating in a festive market environment.

5. Serra Retreat*

The private gated community of Serra Retreat offers a trick-or-treating experience for local residents. While it’s gated and more exclusive, if you live in the area or know residents, this is one of the best places to trick-or-treat in Malibu. Homes in Serra Retreat often feature elaborate decorations, and the large estates offer plenty of candy and Halloween fun for families.

Why it’s great: Private, secure, and beautifully decorated homes for a premium trick-or-treating experience.

Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treating in Malibu

  • Stay well-lit: Some streets in Malibu can be dimly lit, so bring flashlights or wear reflective costumes.
  • Stay on the sidewalks: While Malibu neighborhoods are relatively safe, it’s best to stick to designated walking areas and avoid the roads.
  • Watch out for wildlife: Given the area’s proximity to the mountains, keep an eye out for any animals, especially later in the evening.
  • Check local events: Malibu’s local businesses often offer safe, community-centered trick-or-treating events that can be fun alternatives to going door-to-door.

Whether you're enjoying the organized festivities at Malibu's shopping centers or venturing into the cozy neighborhoods, Malibu offers a charming coastal twist on traditional Halloween celebrations. Wherever you decide to trick-or-treat, you’re bound to have a spooky, fun-filled evening!

*Something to pay attention to: You might need a friend with an “in” in these neighborhoods, as they are so popular.
