The Rocky Oaks Hike is a loop comprised of 4 different trails with lengths ranging from 100 yards to 1.1 miles. The trails are mostly flat with some moderate inclines and declines, the exception being the Overlook Trail that takes you up to the highest point on the hike. The entire hike is approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. The trailhead boasts a free parking lot, water fountain, seating area and public restrooms. Not a bad place for a short hike and a picnic!
Since all of the trails are connected, you can start the hike from any trailhead. We suggest starting with the Rocky Oaks Loop Trail (1.1 miles) and picking other trails along the way as you hike. If you are looking for views of the Santa Monica Mountains make sure to break off from the Loop Trail to the Overlook Trail (100 yards). This is a fun place to whip out your camera for a great panoramic shot. Unfortunately, the pond at the Rocky Oaks Hike has been hit by the drought, like so much of California, and has been dry for over 2 years.
Our favorite part about this hike is that it is less crowded than the average Malibu hike. It is a great place to bring your dog, mountain bike or ride a horse. Be prepared! The temperature in these mountains can be up to 10 degrees hotter than coastal Malibu. We strongly recommend bringing lots of water and a hat.
