The Ray Miller trail at La Jolla Canyon is a longer hike on the most northern point of Malibu. To get to the trailhead, take PCH to La Jolla Canyon. Follow the road until it loops around to a large parking lot. The lot charges $8 and there is plenty of parking. The trailhead has picnic tables, porto potties and water fountains.

There are two trails you can take from the La Jolla Canyon Parking lot, the Ray Miller trail and the Waterfall trail. The Waterfall trail is currently closed—and for good reason. It is very over grown and the namesake waterfall is completely dry. Though it is possible to still hike this trail, we do not recommend the trip. The trail is a bit eerie with a greater chance of unwanted wildlife encounters without regular human traffic.

Instead, take the trail to the right named Ray Miller. This will lead you up and into the canyon for about 10 miles. There are various peaks that boast scenic ocean views. This is a great choice for a longer hike that is not too challenging. There are many ways to add variation to the trail such as taking the fire road on the backbone trail or crossing over to Sycamore trail. Those looking for some really good exercise can choose to run the hike. If not, you can cut the hike short and turn around early once you have enjoyed enough of the beautiful scenery.

Enjoy Malibu Nature!
