The AllThingsMalibu Opinion
The Zuma Ridge Hike is great if you are looking to break a sweat and enjoy Malibu’s famous scenery. This is one of the less-crowded hikes in Malibu, but also boasts some of the most incredible ocean and mountain views.
To get to the trailhead, take PCH to Busch Drive, keep right at the fork about a mile up, and continue to the end of the road to find the free parking lot on the right side of the street. From the parking lot there are two trails you can take. Make sure to follow the path labeled “Zuma Ridge Trail”. Be prepared, there are no restrooms or water fountains. Dogs and horses are welcome, but leave your bike at home.
There are many ways to add variation to this hike. The Zuma Ridge Trail goes for 2.7 miles. About half a mile up there is a lookout path to the left (unmarked—keep your eyes peeled!) with 180-degree ocean views. If you want a little more, you can continue 3 miles to Encinal Canyon Road. This will take you to another street where a friend can pick you up, or you can hike back to where you started.
Another option is to take Edison Road up the opposite ridge. To finish this 10+mile hike, take Edison Road 4 miles to the Zuma Canyon Connection Trail. Continue on the Ocean View Trail to the Bonsall Trailhead. And lastly, take the Ridge Canyon Access Trail (off Zuma Loop Trail).
This is a sunny hike that lacks any shaded areas. We recommend a hat, lots of water and sunscreen!
